All horse owners have something to be thankful for.
November is known as National Gratitude Month. It’s a time to focus on all of the blessings in one’s life. As an equestrian, you likely have a lot to be thankful for. Horses are such gracious animals. They become our teachers and friends in this life together. Let’s not forget all of the professionals and barn buddies that are also on this journey with us.
Count Your Blessings

You can celebrate this month of gratitude by creating a list of all the reasons you’re grateful. Here’s a few ideas to get your mind jogging.
- My horse is such an important part of my life. He helps me to rise up to challenges and face my fears. We have developed a relationship filled with trust, respect, and love. It’s a great honor to be a part of his life and care for him.
- My barn manager is incredible! She ensures that my horse’s needs are always met. My horse is happy and healthy because of her care and attention.
- I have a dedicated farrier that is very reliable. He is kind and patient with my horses.
- I am so thankful for my veterinarian’s expertise. She is always available even during emergencies. She has helped my horse through some difficult situations.
- My trainer is inspirational. She encourages my horse and I to become our best versions. She’s helping me to become a better rider and horsewomen.
- I have the best barn friends. They’re always up for a trail ride. They motivate me to get in the saddle more!
- My spouse is my biggest supporter. He pitches in extra around the house to ensure I get riding time. And he never questions my love for horses or the barn.
Your list may look slightly different depending on how many horses you have and whether you board or take lessons. One thing is for certain that it really does take a village to own a horse. Most horse owners have a whole team behind them offering support and guidance.
Expressing Our Gratitude

Once you have written your gratitude list, it’s time to show them your appreciation! By taking some time to show gratitude both through small or big acts, you can let your horse or that person know how valuable they are to you. Let these ideas inspire you.
Most horses are fairly simple to make happy. They enjoy scratches, treats, and some hand-grazing. If you want to step it up, a good grooming session or massage is a great idea. Horses value quality time, so make sure to give them your attention.
When it comes to people, a simple “thank you” can go a long way. Write them a note or give them a card expressing how much you appreciate them and their time. A nice compliment can really change someone’s day.
Another way to express your thankfulness is to return the favor. Find a way to help them! This can be as simple as cleaning a few stalls for your barn manager or recommending your farrier to new clients. You could offer to run an errand for them. Acts of service go a long way!
And yet a different way of expressing gratitude is through gift giving. From homemade treasures like cookies to a gift card, there are plenty of simple gifts to give a friend or equine professional. Take time to get to know their interests, so can really personalize the gift. A warm coffee in the winter or cold bottle of water in the summer is usually well- received by your vet, farrier, or trainer.
Don’t forget to count your blessings this holiday season!
